Chapter 1 - Installation and Quick Start Information

  • Installing BALANCE PC


  • BALANCE PC is provided on CD-ROM and requires 40MB of free space on your hard drive. Virus protection and other software can interfere with installation. Close all software. including virus checking and error checking software before installing this software.

    1. What is Required? Please read now!
      IBM® or 100% compatible PC.
      Microsoft® Windows version 3.1 or later, or Windows 95
      MS-DOS® operating system version 5.0 or later
      At least 8 megabytes (MB) of RAM, uncompressed hard drive, minimum 40 MB free disk space.
      CD ROM drive, and mouse
    2. Close all other software during installation
      Virus protection and other software can interfere with software installation. Close all software, including virus protection and error checking software before installing.
    3. Insert BALANCE PC into your drive
      Insert the CD into your CD drive with the label of the CD facing up.
      Note: For Windows 95 users, the installation program should start when you put the CD in your CD drive. Please skip to step 8.
    4. Select File Run from Program Manager
      Select File from the Program Manager menu bar, then select Run.
    5. Browse to find the CD drive
      In the Run dialog box. Click Browse, then Click the down arrow of the Drives list and select the CD drive.
    6. Click setup.exe and select OK
      Highlight setup.exe when it appears in the area below the File Name field. Click OK.
    7. Click OK in the Run dialog box
      In the Run dialog box, Click OK to run the command line that appears.
      Note: If you encounter warnings during installation, Click Cancel to exit. Correct the problem before re-running.
    8. Install BALANCE PC
      Click Next.
    9. Read everything on the screens
      Make sure that you have closed all open programs before you continue. If you are asked if you want to backup your existing data, make your choice then continue.
    10. Read and accept the terms of the software license agreement
      Use the scroll bar to view all the text. Click Yes to accept the terms of the agreement anti continue the installation.
    11. Where to Install BALANCE PC?
      We strongly recommend that you install to the suggested directory. However, if you don't want to install to the suggested directory, Click Browse and select a drive and a directory to install to. Click Next.
    12. For Windows 3.X Users: Create a Program Group
      Windows 3.X users have the option to create a program group. Click Next.
    13. For Windows 95 Users: Add Desktop Shortcut Icons
      Windows 95 users have the option to add a program icon to the Start / Programs menu and shortcut icons for BALANCE PC and the Read Me file. Click Next.
    14. Review Your Options then Start Copying Files
      Review the setup type, directory and folder information. Click Back to make changes, or Next. When you continue, Setup installs the program on your PC.

  • BALANCE PC Quick Start

  • This section helps you get started quickly.

    Step 1 - Double-Click 'Balance PC'
      When BALANCE PC is first installed, there may be sample users. The data of sample users is preloaded for you to review. Later, you can log in as any sample user to see how someone uses BALANCE PC. Descriptions of the activities of sample users are found in the chapter Sample Users and Other Profiles of the User's Guide. Now, however, you should add yourself as a user so that you can Log In and get started.
      Note: If you install Balance PC over an existing MediLife database that has no sample users, anti you retained the database (did not install a new one), you will not have sample users. Note: One BALANCE PC installation supports up to eight users. Only one user can run the program at a time.
    Step 2 - Click 'Add a Name'
      This allows you to add yourself as a user.
    Step 3 - Click 'Add'
      Enter your name and a password. The optional password keeps other users from accessing your personal data. Enter a Hint to help remember your password.
    Step 4 - Click 'Log In'
      Select your name from the dropdown list in the Name field then enter your password (does not appear if you have no password), and Click Log In.
    Step 5 - Click 'OK'
      The first time that you Log In, you are shown a disclaimer. By Clicking OK, you indicate that you understand the information and agree to comply.
    Step 6 - Click 'Take the Interview now'
    Step 7 - Click 'Next'
      This advances to the next screen. Continue until the end of the Interview.
    Step 8 - Click 'Done'
      You are now done taking the Interview. When you are done taking the Interview, some of the information is loaded into your personal Smart Health Calendar and related Health Managers. When you are not sure about setting goals, targets, or target ranges, accept the recommended settings. Don't worry about answering all the questions exactly - you can modify all settings and plans directly in the Smart Health Calendar and the Health Managers. We'll show you where to change them later. When you have finished the Interview, all the plans that you scheduled including your exercise, blood glucose tests, insulin and medications appear in the Smart Health Calendar. If you want to schedule an exercise that is not listed in the exercise list in the Interview, it might be on the longer list in the Smart Health Calendar. If not, you can create your own exercise later in the Smart Health Calendar. If you need to schedule more than four drugs, you can schedule a drug from the Drugs list in the Smart Health Calendar. If you don't find your drug on the Drugs list, you can go back to the Interview to create one. If you re-take the Interview, you will not see the plans that you have already scheduled from the Interview. Do not schedule them again, or you may see multiple entries in your daily Calendar.
    Step 9 - Click 'OK'
      Now that you have completed the Interview you'll see the Home screen. From the Home screen you can jump to any part of the program by Clicking on an area in the Home screen, or selecting Jump from the top menu bar. A jump bar is also available on the left side of every screen and consists of several buttons. Click HOME to go to the Home screen. Click CALENDAR to go to the Smart Health Calendar. If you are viewing a Health Manager report, Click CONTENTS to get back to the main screen of the Manager. FORWARD and BACK move you to the next and previous views, respectively, and HELP gets you Help.
    Step 10 - Click 'Diabetes'
      This takes you to the Diabetes Manager.
    Step 11 - Click the Target symbol
      Review your blood glucose target
    Step 12 - Click 'OK'

    Step 13 - Click 'Typical Day

      Review your typical meal times and bedtime. Typical Day start times are used to associate the time you take Blood Glucose measurements with Reading names and the time you take Insulin injections with Injections names. To learn more about this, see the section, Typical Day, in the chapter, Health Managers and Reports.
    Step 14 - Click 'OK'

    Step 15 - Click 'Home'

      This takes you back to the Home Screen
    Step 16 - Click 'Diet & Weight'
      This takes you to the Diet&Weight Manager
    Step 17 - Click the Target symbol
      Review your nutrient targets.
    Step 18 - Click 'OK'

    Step 19 - Click the List symbol

      Review your nutrient order. This sets the top two nutrients in the Calendar Food lists, the top four nutrients in the Food view of the Calendar, and the top six nutrients in the LifeTime Food & Nutrient List.
    Step 20 - Click 'OK'
      Note: You can also set nutrient targets and nutrient display order in the Smart Health Calendar by Clicking anywhere on the gray Nutrient Totals area at the bottom of the Calendar Food View.
    Step 21 - Click 'Calendar'
      You are now looking at the Smart Health Calendar. View Calendar Events by time of day, health category, or just by food in meals. Switch between the three Calendar views by Clicking the appropriate name tab at the bottom of the view (Schedule, Health, or Food). Some events may already be scheduled from the Interview
    Step 22 - Click 'MyEvents'
      This selects the My Events list.
    Step 23 - Select 'Tests'
      This selects the Tests list.
    Step 24 - Click 'Blood Pressure'
      This highlights the blood pressure item.
    Step 25 - Click 'Use'
      A Blood Pressure Edit Dialog box appears. Fill in your information. Fill in the fields to enter this Event for 10 pm, and 140 over 85.
    Step 26 - Click 'Plan'
      Calendar Events can be scheduled for multiple days.
    Step 27 - Click 'Every Day'
      For more information see the section, Scheduling a Repeating Event, in the chapter, Smart Health Calendar.
    Step 28 - Click 'OK'

    Step 29 - Click 'OK'

      The blood pressure Event appears on your Calendar every day.
    Step 30 - Click the left side of '10:00p Blood Pressure, 140/85'
      The V indicates than the Event is confirmed. This feature is a toggle. If you click it again, the Event is unconfirmed. Note: Health Manager Reports show only confirmed Events.
    Step 31 - Click 'Food'
      This changes your Calendar View to the Food View.
    Step 32 - Click '1% Milk'
      The Calendar Foods list should already appear on the right side of the screen.
    Step 33 - Click 'Use'
      An Edit Food Dialog box appears. Fill in your information. At the bottom of the Edit Food dialog box, you can decide whether or not to add this food to My Foods with the same or different name. This list includes the food to make it easy to schedule in case you eat it often. To learn to search the lists for foods, see Searching the Foods list in the chapter, Smart Health Calendar.
    Step 34 - Click 'OK'
      This schedules the food to a meal.
    Step 35 - Click 'Home'
      This takes you back to the Home Screen.
    Step 36 - Select "File" from the menu bar then select "Log In As..."

    Step 37 - Click the dropdown arrow and select "Marjorie (Sample User)"

      Note: if you install Balance PC over an existing MediLife database that has no sample users, and you retained the database (did not install a new one), you will not have sample users.
    Step 38 - Click 'Log In'
      Now we'll go to the Diabetes Manager to review Marjorie's data.
    Step 39 - Click 'Diabetes'
      This takes you to the Diabetes Manager.
    Step 40 - Click in the Blood Glucose selection area
      You will see a table of all of Marjorie's confirmed Blood Glucose Events.
    Step 41 - Make a note of the date range of Marjorie's Blood Glucose Events
      You'll need the date information to view the data by graph.
    Step 42 - Click 'Contents'
      You are back at the contents screen of Diabetes Manager.
    Step 43 - Click in the Blood Glucose selection area

    Step 44 - Click '02/09/97 - 02/15/97'

      The date shown varies with your current date.
    Step 45 - Change the year and month to May 5, 1996
      You will see a graph of Marjorie's confirmed Blood Glucose Events for that week.
    Step 46 - Click 'Contents'
      You are back at the contents screen of the Diabetes Manager.
    Step 47 - Click 'Daily Analyzer'
      The Daily Analyzer presents several health Events in one report. making trends easy to find, in order to help analyze your daily Events. The daily Events that are displayed include blood glucose levels, insulin and oral medications, symptoms, exercise, and nutrition.
    Step 48 - Click 'Contents'
      You are back at the contents screen of the Diabetes Manager.
    Step 49 - Click the Graph symbol
      You will see a modal distribution of some of Marjorie's Blood Glucose Events. Modal Day shows your blood glucose readings by time of day over the time range that you select: day; week; month; quarter; and year. The gray band indicates your selected target range. The distribution of points indicates how well you are controlling your blood glucose levels - clusters of points within your target range indicate average good control for that time of day. Clusters of points spread outside the target range indicate that more control is needed for that time of day.
    Step 50 - Click 'Home'
      This takes you hack to the Home Screen.
    Step 51 - Click 'Diet & Weight'
      This takes you to the Diet & Weight Manager.
    Step 52 - Click in the Calories selection area
      This takes you to the Nutrient Audit Calories Graph. This is a bar graph of the top five foods that contribute to Marjorie's total intake of a selected nutrient. Identify foods high in that nutrient over any time period. Use this information when meal planning, in order to make substitutions in your diet - to keep your nutrient totals on target.
    Step 53 - Click 'Home'
      This takes you back to the Home Screen.
    Step 54 - Click 'Library'
      This takes you to the Library Screen. The Library offers books and lists of information about general health and diabetes.
    Note: If you want to delete the confirmed Blood Pressure Event and Plan that you scheduled in this section. see the sections, Deleting an Event and Deleting a Repeating Event in the chapter, Smart Health Calendar.
    The ReadBal.txt file includes information that was not available at the time this guide was printed. The file is installed in the same directory as BALANCE PC.
    You are now ready to explore the features on your own. Detailed descriptions of the daily activities of sample users are found in the chapter, Sample Users and Other Profiles.
    Remember to Back Up Your Data! Your data is stored in the file, MEDILIFE.DB, located in the \data directory where BALANCE PC is installed. You should make regular backup copies of this file. Please refer to the documentation that came with your computer on how to backup files.
