Chapter 6 - Read Meter

You can transfer your blood glucose readings directly from your blood glucose meter into the Smart Health Calendar, so that you do not have to manually enter them. The transfer of the measurements does not affect the settings in the meter; Balance never deletes or modifies any readings stored in your meter. When you transfer your readings again, only the new readings are added to your Calendar. All meter readings appear in the Smart Health Calendar as Blood Glucose Events. The time of day of the reading is associated with a reading name as described in the section, Blood Glucose and Insulin Event Dialog Boxes in the chapter,
Smart Health Calendar. If your meter supports an option called Event Codes, and you use it, the Readings that you choose for your Meter Event Codes override the associations based on time of day. See the section, Event Codes, later in this chapter. Blood Glucose meters require a data cable and sometimes special software and other hardware, in order to connect to the COM port on your personal computer and to import the blood glucose readings. The special software, hardware, and data cable is manufactured by the meter manufacturer.

  • Getting Started

  • Make sure that your meter is set up to transfer data to Balance. The meter cable should be connected to a COM port of your computer. Some meters have to be ON during the transfer, while others have to be OFF. Review the ReadMe file (called ReadBal.txt) to see if special instructions are available for your meter. Select Read Meter from either the Diabetes Manager, or the Home Screen.

  • Select a Meter and COM port

  • Select your meter from the list of automated meter systems. Click the down arrow beside the Meter: field. Select the name of the meter you use from the dropdown list. If you are asked to specify a COM port, do so now. Click the down arrow next to Pick a COM Port. Select the COM port to which your meter cable is connected. Click 'OK' when done. If you are not sure which COM port it is, review the ReadMe file (called ReadBal.txt) for help on testing your meter and cable.

  • Setting Event Codes

  • If your meter supports Event codes, the Event Codes button appears. If you use Event Codes to label your blood glucose readings, specify the ones that you use now. As each blood glucose test measurement is added to your Calendar, the Meter Event Code of the test is associated with a Reading. Event Code settings are specific to users, not to meters. To change an Event Code, Click the dropdown arrow beside a Code and select a Reading name from the list that appears. Repeat this for all Event Codes that you use then Click 'OK'.

  • Start the Reading

  • Click 'Start' to begin reading your blood glucose meter. You have the choice to use all readings or to omit any.

  • Reviewing the Data

  • Meter readings appear in the Smart Health Calendar and in the Diabetes Manager Blood Glucose reports.

  • Deleting the Data

  • To delete ally meter readings in the Smart Health Calendar, use the date selector at the top right of the screen to select the date whose reading(s) you want to delete. They appear as ordinary blood glucose Calendar Events with special notes that they originated from a meter.
