Troubleshooting
--- Problem ---
When running the program for the first time, an error message appears relating to either 'RTDSK40.EXE or 'The Database".
--- Possible Cause ---
On most PCs, the product uses a process known as 'direct I/O' to efficiently transfer information into and out of the database. 'Direct I/O' can cause the database to malfunction under the following circumstances:
1. The database is installed on a drive which has been compressed with a disk compression utility such as DriveSpace or Stacker.
2. The database is installed on a drive which is accessed over a LAN.
3. You have an older or non-standard disk controller.
--- Solution ---
Disable 'direct I/O' by following these few steps:
1. In FileManager (Windows 3.1) or Explorer (Windows 95), find the file MEDILIFE.INI in your Windows directory (usually C:\WINDOWS). Double-Click on MEDILIFE.INI to open it in the NOTEPAD editor.
2. Locate the Database section of the file.
For Windows 3.X. it might look like this (if you installed to c:\):
[Database]
Database file=c:\medilife\data\medilife.db
For Windows 95, it might look like this (if you installed to c:\Program Files\):
[Database]
Database file=C:\PROGRA~1\MEDILIFE\DATA\MEDILIFE.DB
3. Underneath the line which begins 'Database file=...' insert the following line exactly as it appears here:
Start flags=-c1m -q -ga -d
4. Select 'Save' from Notepads 'File' menu.
5. Exit Notepad and try to run the product again.
--- Other Problems ---
See the READBAL.TXT file in your medilife directory for more information.
