Glossary
Button
A button is a small box on a screen, usually in 3-D form. The button has a name or label, that tells you what it is. For example, the Add Name button in the Log In dialog box tells BALANCE PC to prepare for a new user to set up a log in.
Click
Most computers use an input device called a mouse. It is attached to the computer by a cable. It has a number of buttons on it. If you press a button, you hear a distinctive clicking sound. If you move the mouse, you see that an on-screen indicator (cursor) moves as well. When you position the cursor and Click an area of the screen, you get some programmed response (for example, a new screen may appear).
Date Selector
In the Smart Health Calendar, a calendar that allows you to select a different month, day or year for review and entry. In the managers, a mini-calendar that allows you to change the dates covered in the graphs or tables you want to display.
Dialog Box
A dialog box is a standard feature in Windows programs. It is a box that appears on the screen that allows you to select from a number of options. You may Click buttons, or Click in a box to enter an X, or select an item from a list. When you have made all your selections. you Click OK. The box closes, and the changes you selected are made.
Drag
This is done by mouse. In BALANCE PC, you Click a food in the Foods list (Smart Health Calendar view) and while still holding the mouse button, move or drag the item to a meal. Then let go of the mouse button. You see a dialog box that helps you define and approve the entry.
Dropdown
A feature which expands on the screen when you Click it. For example, the Managers have a dropdown calendar in the screens that allows you to select a date other than the current date.
Event
An item from the Smart Health lists that is incorporated into the Calendar using an Edit Event dialog box.
Edit Event Dialog Box
An Edit Event dialog box is an electronic note that you can select from lists provided by BALANCE PC, or that you can specify yourself. These dialog boxes have tailored fields that you fill in with information. You use an Edit Event dialog box to add a new Event. You edit the original dialog box to change your entry.
Exit
When you are done using a program, you close it by issuing an exit command. In BALANCE PC, you can do this by Clicking on the Exit button in the Home Screen, or by selecting Exit from the File menu.
Food
List items used to complete Meals in the Smart Health Calendars. Serving sizes and nutritional data are stored in the BALANCE PC foods list.
Foods List
A Smart Health list of all foods from the BALANCE PC Foods list, placed in the Calendars for use in scheduling meals. When you open the Food Calendar, this is the list that appears on your screen.
Help
BALANCE PC offers on-line help, so that you can access procedures and answer questions while you are working on the computer. To bring up Help, you can Click the Help button in the Home Screen. Click the Help icon in the jump bar, select Help from the menu, or Click F1.
Home
When you Click the Home icon in the jump bar, you go to the Home Screen.
Icon
A picture that you Click to jump to another screen.
Jump Bar
Several icons are organized in a jump bar to the left of the working screen. They allow you quick access to other parts of BALANCE PC.
Log In
When you open BALANCE PC, you enter your name and a password. This is your Log In. and it keeps your information separate from that of others who may also use the program. Up to eight people may use one copy of BALANCE PC.
Meal
A special kind of Event in the Smart Health Calendars. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner are prescheduled in the Calendar every day. Meals are completed using Foods from the Foods list or the My Foods list. Also, Named Meals can be built from the Foods list and saved in the Meal Editor for reuse.
My Events List
The Smart Health list that appears when you open the Health Calendar or Schedule. It contains items that you have designated for frequent use in your Calendars. Other lists are available when you Click the title bar of the My Events list.
My Foods
A Smart Health list of foods that you have used in the Calendars. This list makes it easy for you to schedule favorite foods. You can also delete foods from the list.
Named Meal
A meal created in the Meal Editor or saved in the Smart Health Calendar. It is not associated with any particular date or time - it is not in the Calendar - but is used to make it easy to add the same set of foods to any Calendar Meal.
Nutrients
Nutrients are the basic building blocks of food. They are calories, fat, protein, vitamins, minerals, and other quantifiable units which we analyze in an effort to increase our wellbeing.
Page turners
In BALANCE PC, the Library screens have graphics at the lower corners which allow us to advance or return one page.
Recipe
Stored foods with measurements and instructions that can be used to complete a Meal. Recipes are stored in the Recipe Editor.
Report
A report is a presentation of confirmed calendar events. Types of reports include line, bar, occurrence and scatter data graphs and tables.
Scroll Bar
Scroll bars are a standard Windows feature. They allow you to view additional text within a screen or window. In BALANCE PC, you may see a scroll bar along the right margin of a screen. Click the down arrow to move down one line. Click the up arrow to move up one line. To move several lines at a time, move the box within the bar.
Search
BALANCE PC searches through its database to match text that you type. For example, if you use the Find field in the lists (Smart Health Calendar Views), BALANCE PC presents a list of exact or possible matches.
Smart Health Calendar
The Smart Health Calendar is a major feature of BALANCE PC. In it you enter and edit health and personal events, and you plan and change meals.
